The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Shift Comes After Poor Reception

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a more defined direction.

The president stated that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to satisfy community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

This announcement follows a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the complete content from Ismailer's communication:

Team—

I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”

Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the necessity for a clearer brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the input to consideration and reimagined the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s ready to achieve its promise to our fans.

The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the new Studio Head of the team. After a period of discussions, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in receiving him next week. We are all excited to keep observing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.

Experience of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Face the opponents with unique powers, risks, and challenges that change every match. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Or aim high, gamble everything, and pray your squad can secure victory? The choice is yours."

The game does not have an official release date or platforms, but fans can expect further news as production advances.
