A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
