McDonald's has pulled a holiday advertisement created via Artificial Intelligence following receiving significant public disapproval.

The brief film was developed with the help of AI-generated video and was first published on the YouTube channel for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Social Media Response and Removal

Shortly after its release, viewers on social media criticized the employment of AI in the film. Many described it as "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".

"This moment represents an valuable learning as we explore the effective use of AI," stated a spokesperson from the company.

The advert was developed for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It depicted various things that can go wrong during the Christmas break, under the theme "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads

Commercials that incorporate AI tools have become a increasing phenomenon among large brands, notably for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has also released consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Technical Challenges: As segments produced using generative AI are more likely to become unstable the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also raised fears about the replacement of human roles in the creative industry, with some observers noting it might reduce opportunities for actors.

Response from the Creators

Following the video's removal, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

According to her, the production process required "over a month and a half" and involved generating "numerous versions" which were then shaped afterward "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she said. "It was a proper commercial."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was mostly criticized, the response for other AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a recent AI-created holiday spot from another major brand according to analysis achieved a significant "favorable response" from online commenters.

However, other businesses have likewise encountered backlash for using the technique in marketing. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some described as "lazy" and "uncanny".

The episode illustrates the ongoing debate within the marketing and production sectors about the balance between new tools and creative integrity.
